I love Mexico. I love the food, the beaches, the culture, the ruins, the food…
Often when I’m entertaining, I take inspiration from our travels in Mexico…especially the taco carts! Tacos are one of my perfect meals. We can be sitting on the beach, pop back to the street to hit a taco cart and – presto! Perfect beach snack.
Since my Spanish isn’t very good, I’ve actually gone up to a taco cart on the street and just taken the advice of the nice men eating there (OK…the “advice” was them pointing at one of the fillings, giving it a thumbs up and nodding enthusiastically, but man, that was a good taco.)
Don’t be afraid of street food. I think the best advice I’ve received on eating street food is to go to the food carts that are crowded and where all of the locals are eating. I’ve always done this and never gotten sick….and I’ve always had a great meal.
My favourite taco stand was a little roadside shack, just outside of Puerto Vallarta, on the highway on our way to the ruins of Guachimontones. It was run by a lovely woman with two giant, steaming pots of already prepared tacos. You selected how many tacos you wanted and went to the fixin’ station.
I loved the simplicity of the toppings that they were offering – sliced cabbage, onions, cilantro and two types of salsa. You topped your tacos and sat down at one of the picnic tables to eat. We were definitely the only tourists there…
More on throwing your very own taco party soon!
